Giancarlo DeTrizio – “Groove tips” course
Originally from the city of Molfetta in the south of Italy, Giancarlo de Trizio started playing piano at the age of 9 and drums when he was 12. After studying drums for 2 years with Rino Corrieri, he was admitted at the Music Conservatory “Niccolo’ Piccini” in Bari where he graduated in 2007 with Summa cum Laude under the guidance of M. Beniamino Forestiere. In 2006 he won the International Snare Drum Competition (Bari) and the International Competition for Percussion Instruments and Drum Set sponsored by the P.A.S. (Fermo).
As a scholarship recipient, Giancarlo decided to further his studies at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. Here he had a chance to study with Terri Lyne Carrington, Kenwood Dennard, Mark Walker, Tony “Thunder” Smith; and collaborate with Gabrielle Goodman, Lawrence Watson, Janice Pendarvis, Prince Charles Alexander among many others…
While at Berklee, he soon became one of the most in demand drummers in the Boston area and received numerous awards:
– Most Improved Drummer ’07, Vater Drum Set Award ‘10 (Berklee College of Music).
– Steve Ettleson Scholarship ‘08 (Percussive Arts Society).
– New England Urban Music Award ‘11 (Rajdulari Jazz Project).
A big part of Giancarlo’s work in Boston has been performing for Musical Theatre, including shows such as West Side Story, Parade, Aida, The Great American Trailer Park Musical, Nine and Drowsy Chaperone.
A special mention is also deserved to Giancarlo’s collaboration with John “JR” Robinson (drummer for Micheal Jackson, Chaka Khan, Quincy Jones), Ben E. King (writer of the 60’s hit song “Stand by Me”), Angelique Kidjo (Grammy award-winning recording artist), Alan Silvestri (composer of Back to the Future, Forest Gump) and Wataru Hokoyama (Resident Evil, Africa).
He graduated from Berklee College of Music in Drum Set Performance with Summa Cum Laude in August 2010 and moved to New York City right after. Here he was selected to be the drummer on the 2nd National Tour of the award-winning Broadway musical “In The Heights”, (Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album and Winner of 4 Tony Awards, including Best Musical).
He currently holds the drum chair for the 1st National Tour of the award-winning Broadway musical “The Book of Mormon”, (Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album and Winner of 9 Tony Awards, including Best Musical).
Giancarlo is also an active clinician having taught at Musicians Institute (LA) and Berklee College of Music (Boston).
